Meet The Sheriff

Kelly Wells 
Kelly Wells was elected Sheriff of Caribou County on November 8, 2016, and was sworn into office on January 9, 2017.

Prior to becoming sheriff, Kelly Wells served as a Battalion Armorer, Rifleman, Automatic Rifleman, Fire-Team Leader, and Squad Leader during his enlistment in the United States Marine Corps.  He was responsible for the training, supervision, and leadership of a Fleet Marine Force infantry squad.  His squad was trained and specialized in amphibious assault, aerial assault and as an immediate action response force with an emphasis on Embassy evacuation and hostage rescue.

He went on to a career in law enforcement that has now spanned over 25 years.  In 1991, he began his law enforcement career with the Travis County Sheriff's Office in Austin, Texas.  In 1992, he moved to Jackson, Wyoming and began working for the Teton County Sheriff's Office.  In 2012, He retired from the Teton County Sheriff's Office and took a position with the Teton County Sheriff's Office in Idaho.  In 2015, He returned to the Teton County Sheriff's Office in Wyoming where he worked until December of 2016.

During his career, Kelly Wells has served as a Corrections Officer, Detention Officer, Detention Sergeant, Patrol Deputy, Patrol Sergeant, Detective Sergeant, SWAT Operator, SWAT Team Leader, SWAT Team Trainer, Training Sergeant, Chief Deputy, U.S Marshal's Fugitive Task Force member and Liaison to the U.S. Secret Service protective detail for U.S. Presidential, Vice Presidential and other dignitary visits to the Jackson, Wyoming area. 

He has logged over 4000 hours of POST certified training through Wyoming and Idaho POST.  He is certified as a professional peace officer in Wyoming and holds a management certification through the state of Idaho.  He is a graduate of the FBI National Academy and is a certified tactical shooting and patrol rifle instructor through the NRA.  He has over 10 years of SWAT experience; over 20 years of experience instructing firearms and Officer Safety related high-risk training.

Sheriff Wells and his team are currently serving Caribou County with honor and integrity.
